CONWAY, S.C. – No. –/18 Coastal Carolina (3-2) used a second-minute penalty kick to capture momentum en route to a 3-0 win over South Carolina (3-2) on Tuesday evening at the CCU Soccer Stadium.

Just inside the second minute, a Coastal Carolina attacker had possession inside the 18 against the Gamecocks when he went down, prompting the penalty kick call against SC. Elis Bjornsson took the shot from the spot and banged it on the inside of the right post, where it bounced in to give the Chanticleers a 1-0 lead.

In the 42nd minute, Agust Arnarson shot a ball toward the goalmouth from deep in the corner. A Gamecock defender tried to steer it aside, but instead it deflected into the goal to give Coastal the 2-0 advantage.

South Carolina tried to press on offense a little more in the second half, actually taking a 6-5 lead in shots and a 2-1 difference in corner kicks. But no looks proved as good as Louis Dargent’s shot in the 89th minute on a breakaway, slotting the shot into the net for the Chanticleers’ third goal of the night.

Arnarson posted a goal and an assist on the night for Coastal, while Kevin La Bras had the other assist for the Chanticleers. Gamecock sophomore goalkeeper Marco Velez had two saves on the night, while his counterpart Devin Cook-Perales made four in the shutout.

Game Changer:
The first foul of the match called 66 seconds in against the Gamecocks resulted in a penalty kick that Coastal put away, and the Chanticleers never looked back.
