COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina women’s soccer (7-1-0) moved up from No. 16 to No. 14 in this week’s National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/Continental Tire NCAA Division I Women’s Rankings after sweeping USF and FGCU on the road. Senior goalkeeper Sabrina D’Angelo earned recognition from College Sports Madness and TopDrawerSoccer for the shutout efforts.
In other polls, Soccer America and TopDrawerSoccer.com kept the Gamecocks at No. 23 and No. 11, respectively.
After earning SEC Defensive Player of the Week honors yesterday, D’Angelo was named National Defensive Player of the Week by College Sports Madness and was an honorable mention on the TopDrawerSoccer.com Team of the Week. D’Angelo earned her 25th and 26th career shutouts over USF and FGCU on the road last week. The Gamecock has captained the defense to a nation-leading seven shutouts this season. South Carolina is second in the nation with a 0.123 goals against average.
The Gamecocks along with No. 1 UCLA and No. 4 Stanford are the only three teams in Division I to allow one goal or less this season.
South Carolina begins SEC play on Sun., Sept. 21, at Auburn, who is receiving votes in the NSCAA poll. The 1 p.m. ET contest is set to be televised on the SEC Network. At the start of league play, four SEC teams are in the top 25 – No. 7 Florida, No. 11 Texas A&M, No. 14 South Carolina and No. 24 Georgia.
