Gamecocks Close Exhibition Slate Sat. at Furman

Aug. 22, 2014

COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina ends its exhibition season when it travels to Furman for Saturday evening’s contest at 7, played at Stone Soccer Stadium.

The outing brings together former Gamecock standouts Doug Allison and Charlie Arndt with their former head coach Mark Berson. Two of the first All-Americans in the Garnet and Black are the head and volunteer assistant coach, respectively, at Furman.

Last year, Furman went 11-5-2, finishing fourth in the Southern Conference. In the new six-team setup for the league, the Paladins were picked to win it, with four student-athletes making the preseason All-SoCon team. Sven Lissek, one of the quartet honored, posted nine shutouts a season ago.

South Carolina returns to exhibition play with its defense rounding into form, led by senior center backs Mahamoudou Kaba and Braeden Troyer. Both were honored on the Preseason All-Conference USA Team, with Kaba taking the Preseason Defensive Player of the Year spot. Also back to help the Gamecocks limit their foes is goalkeeper Marco Velez, who had three saves in 60 minutes against Elon on Tuesday night.

No live stats will be available for the contest, but fans can watch the live video on FurmanPaladins.com.
