COLUMBIA, S.C. – The South Carolina women’s soccer program recently wrapped up a full schedule of Carolina Soccer School summer camps at Stone Stadium. Coaches and players worked with campers on fundamentals and teaching them new skills to improve their game.

“We had a great turnout again this summer. The campers had a wonderful time and learned a lot,” South Carolina head coach Shelley Smith said of the summer. “Our players were very engaged in working with the campers from around the community, and we’re excited to see them come out to cheer our team on this fall.

“We also had a great time using the World Cup as a theme. During the first camp we held, we broke into groups and had each one represent different countries. They learned something about the team they joined, so it was not just about learning new soccer skills. They were able to learn more about what was going on in soccer beyond our country.”

“It was my last year working camp and I had an amazing time! Having the opportunity to meet and work with some pretty special and unique kids made my day throughout camp. Not only were they great soccer players, but they were also great kids. It is humbling for us to be their role models. I’m definitely going to miss begin a part of it next year,” senior Sabrina D’Angelo added.

During the sessions, campers worked on the basic elements of soccer such as dribbling, passing and shooting, in addition to developing their defensive techniques.

A low player-to-coach ratio allows for personalized instruction that helps them develop their skills more effectively. The camp also groups players by age and skill level so that each camper is challenged but not overwhelmed.
