Kyle Carpenter To Receive Medal Of Honor Today

June 19, 2014

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Marine and University of South Carolina student Cpl. Kyle Carpenter is set to receive the Medal of Honor Thursday afternoon in Washington, D.C. for his actions in Marjah, Helmand province, Afghanistan. Carpenter threw his body on a grenade blast to shield a fellow Marine. He will be just the eighth living recipient of the Medal of Honor for actions in Iraq or Afghanistan.

Carpenter has been heavily involved with Gamecock Athletics while enrolled at South Carolina, including a visit to share his story with the men’s soccer team and being recognized on the field at Williams-Brice Stadium during the annual Salute to the Military football halftime.
