COLUMBIA, S.C. – University of South Carolina junior Adele Norton was named to the 2014 SEC Equestrian Community Service Team, it was announced today. Norton joins student-athletes from Auburn, Georgia, and Texas A&M on the equestrian community service team, a group whose superior service is recognized by the Southeastern Conference.

“This is a very deserving recognition for Adele and we are all proud of her,” South Carolina head coach Boo Major said. “Adele represents our program and University in a first-class manner, and she has been very active her entire career in a variety of community service projects. Our team as a whole has participated in a lot more community service projects this year and I think they’ve really gotten a lot out of being able to give back, and it speaks volumes about the character this team has.”

Norton was named to the SEC Community Service Team this year for her efforts with a variety of organizations and projects. Norton has volunteered with Pets, Inc., and has been very active with the University of South Carolina’s Service Saturday program, where she has served the homeless community. She has logged over 111 hours working with the Northern Virginia Therapeutic Riding Program, a nonprofit organization that provides equine assisted activities for children and adults with disabilities, youth-at-risk, recovering military service personnel, and their families. She also has volunteered with Curing Kids Cancer, the Palmetto Health Children’s Hospital, Epworth Children’s Home, and Martha’s Table, a group dedicated to providing healthy food, affordable clothing, and quality education in the Washington, D.C. area.

In her first season in the South Carolina lineup, Norton is 6-2 this year in equitation on the flat. She has wins over Delaware State, Texas A&M, New Mexico State, Tennessee-Martin, and a pair of victories against Auburn. She is 5-1 on the road in equitation on the flat this year, tied for the team lead in flat wins on the road. Norton is also a recipient of the McKissick Scholar’s Award and she was awarded the George Walter Waring Award, given to two sophomores each year who have demonstrated particular ability for the study of English.

She was named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll in 2012 and 2013.
