Gamecocks Come Up Short at College of Charleston, 3-2

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. — The South Carolina sand volleyball team lost a back-and-forth dual with College of Charleston, 3-2, on Saturday afternoon at the Creekside Tennis and Swim Club.
The Gamecocks (4-11) and Cougars played to three sets in three out of the five matches, and only one third set was decided by more than two points.
College of Charleston (6-2) took a 1-0 lead after its No. 4 pair of Kari Fidelholtz and Catey Warren defeated the Gamecocks’ pair of Chynna Ratner and Litsa Darby in straight sets, 21-12 and 21-13.
South Carolina evened the dual at 1-1 on court No. 5. KoKo Atoa-Williams and Erin Neuenfeldt topped the Cougars’ Kallie McKown and Maddie Hills in three sets by the scores of 21-16, 16-21 and 15-13.
The Cougars went back in front, 2-1, with a win on court No. 3, as South Carolina’s Jordan Loney and Jade Vitt lost to Sloane White and Andi Zbojniewicz in two sets, 21-17 and 21-16.
The dual came down to the No. 1 and No. 2 pairs matches, and College of Charleston clinched the win with a victory on court No. 1. The Cougars’ Emily Neideffer and Darcy Dorton defeated South Carolina’s Megan Kent and Paige Wheeler in three sets by the scores of 19-21, 21-18 and 15-11.
The Gamecocks wrapped up the dual with a win on court No. 2, as Mikaela Christiaansen an Sarah Blomgren edged College of Charleston’s Melissa Morello and Cara Howley in three sets, 21-18, 16-21 and 17-15.
South Carolina will close out play in the College of Charleston Sand Classic on Sunday with a dual against No. 8 Georgia State. First serve is set for 12 p.m.
