Andrew Schafer Named SEC Freshman of the Week
Feb. 5, 2014
COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina’s Andrew Schafer (Hilton Head Island, S.C./Hilton Head Prep) earned SEC Freshman of the Week honors, the league office announced today. He turned in three singles victories last week, including the match-deciding victory over Middle Tennessee State in the first match of Sunday’s doubleheader sweep.
Schafer has been a solid contributor in his first dual-match campaign as his three wins last week kept him undefeated in singles action, playing largely in the No. 6 spot. The Gamecocks’ most efficient freshman also recorded the team’s lone singles point in a loss at Georgia Tech with a commanding 6-2, 6-0 victory. In the week’s finale, he yielded just one game to Wofford’s Parks Thompson in a straight-set win. In doubles, Schafer has been just as productive with a 4-2 record with Andrew Adams. The duo clinched the doubles point at Georgia Tech with a tiebreak win in the No. 3 spot for the second-straight match.
The No. 26 Gamecocks are on the road this weekend, heading to the heart of Atlantic Coast Conference territory with matches at No. 19 Wake Forest on Fri., Feb. 7, and at No. 32 NC State on Sun., Feb. 9.
