GAINESVILLE, Fla. – After one day of competition at the SEC Indoor Track and Field Championships hosted by the University of Florida, the Gamecocks are near the top of the standings after the men’s and women’s pentathlon competition. Fred Townsend finished third in the men’s pentathlon with 4,014 points while Antoinette Wilks finished second on the women’s side with 4,066 points. Chelsea Hammond also scored in the pentathlon, finishing sixth with 3,752 points.

Townsend set a season high mark in the high jump with a height of 6′ 10.75. He also set a season high mark in the 55m hurdles with a time of 7.36, topping his former best time of 7.40. The Baton Rouge, La., native tied a season high mark of 22′ 7.75 in the long jump to total a season high of 4,014 points.

Wilks set a season best mark of 21’1.25 in the long jump, an impressive improvement from her previous best of 20′ 3.75. Hammond also set a season best mark in the long jump with a mark of 19’4.75, topping her previous top mark of 19’0.

The Gamecock men currently stand in third place in team scoring with six points. Tennessee leads the way with 18, followed by Auburn with 11. Arkansas is in fourth place with four points.

The Carolina women finished the day in second place with 11 points. Georgia leads the women with 12 points and Arkansas is in third with 10 points. Vanderbilt currently stands in fourth place with five points while Ole Miss rounds of the top five with one point.

Day two of the SEC Indoor Championships begins Saturday at 12:00 p.m. ET with the long jump competition. Running events begin at 1:00 p.m. ET with the semi-finals of the 55m dash. Live results throughout the entire meet can be found at www.uscsports.com.
