COLUMBIA, S.C. – University of South Carolina equestrian coach Boo Major announced today the signing of 2013 AQHYA horsemanship champion Megan Overberg (Hillsboro, Ohio/Hillsboro High School) to a national letter of intent to join the Gamecock equestrian program for the 2014-2015 season. Overberg will ride with Carolina’s western team and will compete for the Gamecocks in horsemanship.

“We’re really excited to have Megan join us for next season, we think she is going to be a great addition to our team,” Major said. “We think she is a fantastic horsemanship rider and she’s also an all-around athletic talent. She’s a very successful student in the classroom and we’re looking forward to having her for the next four years.”

Overberg trains with Brent Tincher.

Overberg has enjoyed a tremendously successful youth career, highlighted by her 2013 horsemanship championship at the American Quarter Horse Youth Association (AQHYA) World Show. From 2010-2012, Overberg collected top-10 finishes and top-five finishes in horsemanship and equitation. At the last year’s All American Quarter Horse Congress, Overberg finished fourth in horsemanship (15-18), sixth in equitation (15-18), and seventh in NYATT horsemanship. In 2008, Overberg was the 11 & under equitation champion at the All American Quarter Horse Congress, where she also finished as the reserve champion in the 11 & under all-around and in the 11 & under trail. In 2007, she was the novice 13 & under reserve all-around champion.

A multi-sport athlete at Hillsboro High School, Overberg also competes on the track team. In 2012 and 2013, she was a state qualifier for the 400m and 4×4. She also holds the Hillsboro High School and league record in the 400m.

Overberg is also involved in a variety of extracurricular activities, including serving as vice president of student development, vice president of the Spanish club, secretary of the student council, pep committee chairwoman, and she is a member of the National Honors Society. In 2013, Overberg was a Honda-Ohio State Math Medal Award recipient, and she won the Hillsboro High School Don Mackenzie Scholastic Award.

Born June 14, 1996, her parents are Don and Julie Overberg, and she has a sister, Mallory.

While at South Carolina, Overberg plans to be a psychology major. She chose the Gamecocks over Ohio State, Georgia and Oklahoma State.
