KANSAS CITY, Kan. – On the heels of one of the best seasons in program history, South Carolina landed three student-athletes on the All-South Region teams. Junior goalkeeper Sabrina D’Angelo led the way as she was selected to the first team for the second time in her career, while redshirt junior defender Taylor Leach was named to the second team and senior forward Danielle Au was on the third team.
D’Angelo, who earlier today was named as one of 15 semifinalists for the MAC Hermnan Trophy, earned her second SEC Defensive Player of the Year award last month after also winning the honor as a freshman in 2011. She was also an All-SEC performer for the third consecutive year. Her 12 shutouts tripled her previous high set two years ago and moved her into second place all-time at South Carolina in career shutouts (19). The 12 shutouts also currently ranks seventh in the NCAA this year. Playing every minute in goal for the Gamecocks, she allowed 14 goals in 23 games.
Leach anchored the top defense in the conference and one of the best in the country in 2013. As a team, the Gamecocks boast the 15th best goals against average in the nation at 0.591. In the SEC, the defense allowed the least goals (14), points (39), shots on goal (72), while also posting the second most shutouts at 12. After scoring the game-winner in a 2-1 double overtime victory at then-No. 8 Florida on Oct. 4, the centerback was named SEC Defensive Player of the Week and listed on TopDrawerSoccer’s Team of the Week. She scored a season-high three goals in 2013 with two coming in game-winning fashion.
Au, who last week became the eighth Gamecock in program history to be named to the Capital One Academic All-America Team, finished second on the team this season in goals (7), assists (4) and points (18). She concluded her career ranked fourth all-time in goals (23) and points (59) at South Carolina. Au also ranks third in game-winning goals (11) and seventh in assists (13). In the first week of the 2013 season, she tallied one of her game-winning goals in a 1-0 victory over then-No. 7 Duke to give the program its first win on its home field over a Top 10 team since 2004. She was subsequently named SEC Offensive Player of the Week.
