COLUMBIA, S.C. – Details have been finalized for the “2014 Legends Weekend, Commemorating Frank McGuire,” set to be held Jan. 17-18 in Columbia, hosted by Gamecock head basketball coach Frank Martin, his wife Anya, the entire coaching staff and the Carolina Basketball Legends Club.
A large number of Gamecock Legends are set to attend this weekend’s event, including several McGuire-era greats. Among those are All-American and Naismith Hall of Fame inductee Alex English, All-American’s Zam Fredrick, Kevin Joyce and Brian Winters, All-ACC honorees Gary Gregor and Jack Thompson and 14-year NBA veteran and South Carolina Top 10 scorer Mike Dunleavy.
Weekend festivities begin with a street topping ceremony on Friday evening at 5:30 p.m., when Greene Street between Assembly and Gadsden Streets will be topped as “McGuire Way.” The event, which will be held inside the front entrance at Colonial Life Arena and is free and open to the public, will feature several speakers, including South Carolina Athletics Director Ray Tanner, Coach Martin, local dignitaries and Gamecock greats from the McGuire era.
Fans are encouraged to arrive early to Colonial Life Arena on Saturday for the 4:30 p.m. SEC contest versus Ole Miss. Doors for the arena will open at 3 p.m., and the first 5,000 fans in attendance will receive a Frank McGuire placard. An autograph session with McGuire-era legends will be held from 3:15-3:45 p.m., on the concourse near the front entrance, and there will be a pre-game presentation on the court for all legends listed by decade, beginning at approximately 4 p.m., including a special pre-game video.
Also during Saturday’s contest there will be a special football recognition at halftime, with Head Coach Steve Spurrier set to address the crowd. There will be a poster give-away at the door when entering the arena, commemorating Carolina’s third-straight 11-win season. Select members of the football team will be present for the presentation, which will also feature a highlight video from the 2013 campaign on the video board.
There will be a limited number of Roost T-Shirts available for students, which will have a Frank McGuire and Frank Martin special theme. There will also be free food for students, double loyalty points and a face painting station.
The Gamecocks travel to Texas A&M on Wednesday evening (8 p.m. ET, SEC TV (check local listings), before hosting the Rebels on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. (FSN).
