LORTON, Va. — South Carolina junior Sean Kelly carded an opening-round 72 (+2) on Monday at the 88th U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship at Laurel Hill Golf Club.

Kelly wrapped up the day in a tie for 50th and is nine strokes back of tournament leader Eric Sugimoto, who shot a 7-under 63. A native of Staten Island, N.Y., Kelly recorded two birdies and four bogeys on the afternoon.

Following Tuesday’s second round of stroke play, the field will be cut to 64 golfers for six rounds of match play.

Kelly is slated to tee off in the second round at 7:10 a.m. on Tuesday. Live scoring will be available at USGA.org.
