COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina rising sophomore Sarah Schmelzel is in a tie for second place after carding a 1-under 71 on Tuesday in the opening round of the 83rd Trans National Amateur Championship at Schaffer’s Mill Golf and Lake Club in Truckee, Calif.

A native of Phoenix, Ariz., Schmelzel recorded three birdies and a double bogey on the afternoon. She will enter the second round three strokes back of tournament leader Ashlan Ramsey, who shot a 4-under 68. The field will be cut to the lowest 60 scores and ties after Wednesday’s second round, and the tournament will continue for two more rounds.

Junior Justine Dreher is also in action this week as she is playing for Team France in the European Ladies’ Amateur Team Championship at Fulford Golf Club in York, England. Dreher, a native of Valbonne, France, carded a 5-over 77 in the opening round to help Team France move into a tie for seventh at 11-over 371. Following Wednesday’s second round, the top eight teams will advance to three days of match play. Denmark holds the lead after the first round at 11-under.
