AWENDAW, S.C. — The South Carolina men’s golf team shot a first-round 316 (+28) and was 6-over par in the second round of the Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate on Monday before play was suspended due to darkness at Bulls Bay Golf Club.
The Gamecocks were in 10th place at 34-over before play was halted. Six of the 15 teams in the field had golfers left on the course. Carolina’s golfers have anywhere from three to six holes left in the second round, which will resume at 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday. The final round will begin with a shotgun start immediately after the conclusion of the second round.
The teams faced extremely strong winds and cold weather all day Monday, and the scores reflected the conditions. The average score for the first round was 78.21, while the overall average, including second-round scores that had been turned in, was 76.98.
Freshman Matt NeSmith is in position to play for a third straight top-10 finish on Tuesday as he wrapped up the day in a tie for 13th at 4-over. A native of North Augusta, S.C., NeSmith posted a 77 (+5) in the first round and was 1-under through 15 holes in the second round. He is coming off a tie for third finish at the Palmetto Intercollegiate.
Senior Dykes Harbin is just outside the top 20 in a tie for 26th at 7-over par. He matched NeSmith in the first round with a 77 (+5) and was 2-over with his second-round scores reported from the front nine.
Junior Caulder Moore is in a tie for 47th at 11-over after shooting a first-round 80 (+8) and playing to 3-over par through 15 holes in the second round.
Sophomores Will Murphy and Caleb Sturgeon are tied for 52nd (+12) and 66th (+16), respectively. Murphy shot an 82 (+10) in the first round and was 2-over through 15 holes before darkness set in. Sturgeon turned in an opening-round 83 (+11) and was 5-over through 12 holes in the second round.
Fifteenth-ranked LSU is in the tournament lead at 13-over par, followed by Duke (+14), Missouri (+16), North Carolina State (+18) and North Carolina (+23). North Carolina State’s Albin Choi and Duke’s Mads Soegaard are tied for the individual lead at 2-under.
