COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina forward Michael Carrera was named to the 2013 SEC All-Freshman Team on Tuesday, as voted on by the league’s 14 head coaches. The league honors were announced in advance of the 2013 SEC Tournament, which begins on Wednesday in Nashville, Tenn.

Carrera has had an outstanding year in 2012-13, posting five double-doubles on the season, 12 double-figure scoring games and six double-figure rebounding efforts. Carrera has led or shared the team lead in scoring on nine occassions, and has collected a team best in rebounds 13 times. He has led the team in scoring in six and in rebounding in nine of the last 12 games entering SEC Tourney play, averaging 10.4 points and 7.8 rebounds during the stretch. Among freshmen in the SEC (overall games), Carrera ranks fourth in scoring (10.0) and second in rebounding (7.3). Carrera’s selection is the first in the category for the Gamecocks since Bruce Ellington was named to the All-Freshman Team in 2011.

Florida’s Billy Donovan earned SEC Coach of the Year honors while Georgia sophomore Kentavious Caldwell-Pope was selected the SEC Player of the Year by the league’s coaches. Kentucky’s Nerlens Noel took home SEC Freshman of the Year and SEC Defensive Player of the Year accolades. Kentucky’s Kyle Wiltjer was tabbed SEC Sixth Man of the Year while Florida’s Patric Young earned SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors.
