FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. –

South Carolina’s men’s and women’s swimming teams proceeded in preliminary competition at the Arkansas Natatorium Friday afternoon, qualifying four swimmers in finals and eight swimmers in the consolation. Both squads will look to move up this evening from sixth place.

Following up on his success from last night in the 50 freestyle, senior Zsolt Gaspar qualified in the 100 butterfly with the top time of all the heats at 47.17. Gaspar will compete for his second SEC title this season. Also looking to defend his SEC 200 freestyle championship is sophomore Tamas Szucs, who qualified in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:37.40. Sophomore Istvan Bathazi will compete in the finals of the 400 individual medley, after qualifying fifth with a time of 3:52.53. On the women’s side, Anna Nyiry qualifited for the 100 butterfly finals with a time of 54.58. Nyiry is the defending 100 butterfly champion in the SEC.

The Lady Gamecocks had several swimmers come close to the finals and reach consolation. Freshman Capi Adams was ninth in the 400 individual medley with a time of 4:22.41 and sophomore Jennifer VanAssen also fnished ninth in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:49.71. Freshman Heather Skaggs (55.62) and senior Sarah Massey (56.22) placed 10th and 15th respecitively in the 100 butterfly to reach the consolation finals. Junior Kristen Butler qualified in the consolation for the 100 backstroke with a time of 57.10. Sophomore Priscilla Humberstone placed 16th in the 100 breastroke with a time of 1:05.61 and will also compete in the consolation.

Qualifying for the men’s squad in the consolation was sophomore Chris McCrary in the 100 butterfly with a time of 48.45 and senior Javier Botello in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:38.98.
