TEMPE, Ariz. — The South Carolina women’s golf team is in 13th place at the PING ASU Invitational after shooting a second-round 299 (+11) on Saturday at the ASU Karsten Golf Course.
The Gamecocks, who have a two-round total of 590 (+14), will enter Sunday’s final round looking to make a charge up the leaderboard after dropping back three spots on Saturday.
Freshman Sarah Schmelzel led the way again on Saturday as she carded a 1-over 73 to move into a tie for 16th with a total of 143 (-1). A native of Phoenix, Ariz., Schmelzel tallied three birdies and four bogeys on the afternoon to put herself in position for a second straight top-20 finish.
Junior Suzie Lee matched Schmelzel’s 73 for the low round of the day for South Carolina. Lee wrapped up the day in a tie for 45th with a total of 148 (+4). Lee was 1-under through 12 holes before making a double bogey on the par-4 third. She made par on the final six holes to head into the clubhouse at 1-over.
Senior Meredith Swanson turned in a 75 (+3) on Saturday to close out the afternoon in a tie for 35th with a total of 146 (+2). Freshman Mary Fran Hillow and sophomore Justine Dreher carded rounds of 78 (+6) and 79 (+7), respectively. Hillow is in a tie for 66th with a total of 153 (+9), and Dreher is tied for 73rd with a total of 156 (+12).
Junior Samantha Swinehart, who is playing as an individual, shot a 79 (+7) for the second straight day and is in a tie for 76th with a total of 158 (+14).
Second-ranked Duke holds a five-shot lead over No. 3 Alabama with a total of 563 (-13). Top-ranked Southern California and Stanford are tied for third with a total of 571 (-5), followed by Arizona (572) and Arizona State (572). Duke’s Laetitia Beck and Alabama’s Emma Talley are tied for the individual lead with a total of 137 (-7).
The Gamecocks will begin teeing off in the final round on Sunday at 8:10 a.m. MST off the No. 10 tee. Carolina will be paired with UNLV and Oregon. Live scoring will be available at golfstatresults.com.
