BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – South Carolina freshman forward Michael Carrera was named SEC Freshman of the Week on Monday, Nov. 12, after scoring 17 points and gathering 15 rebounds in a win over Milwaukee on Sunday in the opening round of the Hoops for Hope Classic in Columbia. The high-energy forward shot 50 percent for the game, and hit a perfect 5-of-5 attempts from the free throw line. Carrera had a near double-double with nine points and nine rebounds at halftime, and quickly claimed the double-double in the second half. He was instrumental in the overtime period as well, hitting two free throws early in the five-minute session to give the Gamecocks the lead for good. The win marked the first for Frank Martin as head coach of the Gamecocks.

South Carolina continues non-conference play when it hosts Morgan State on Friday, Nov. 16 at 7 p.m.
