GREENSBORO, N.C. — The South Carolina women’s golf team posted a 301 (+13) on Saturday in the second round of the Bryan National Collegiate on the Champions Course at Bryan Park Golf and Enrichment Center.

The Gamecocks are in a tie for eighth place with ninth-ranked North Carolina and North Carolina State with a total of 597 (+21) heading into Sunday’s final round. Carolina remains in the mix for a top-five finish as it is just two strokes behind fourth-place Georgia (595) and Auburn (595).

Freshman Sarah Schmelzel continued her solid play to lead the Gamecocks for a second straight day. She carded a 1-over 73 and is in a tie for fifth with a total of 144 (E). Schmelzel will enter the final round four strokes back of tournament leader Brittany Altomare (Virginia), who has a total of 140 (-4).

A native of Phoenix, Ariz., Schmelzel recorded four birdies, three bogeys, a double bogey and 10 pars as she attempts to earn the first top-five finish of her career. Her best finish so far this season was a tie for 20th showing at the NCAA Fall Preview.

Junior Samantha Swinehart, who is playing as an individual, is in contention for a top-20 finish as she carded a 75 on Saturday and is tied for 18th with a total of 147 (+3). She finished the afternoon with three birdies, four bogeys and a double bogey on the scorecard.

Junior Suzie Lee and sophomore Justine Dreher are in a tie for 37th with a total of 150 (+6). Lee turned in a 77 (+5) on Saturday, and Dreher carded a 78 (+6). Freshmen Chelsey Couch and Mary Fran Hillow are in a tie for 61st and 82nd, respectively. Couch shot a 75 (+3) to take her total to 155 (+11), while Hillow recorded a 76 (+4) and has a total of 160 (+16).

Virginia holds the 36-hole lead with a total of 574 (-2). Arkansas is in second with a total of 583 (+7), followed by Vanderbilt (586), Georgia (595) and Auburn (595).

Final-round play will begin on Sunday with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. The Gamecocks will be paired with Michigan State and Duke. Live scoring will be available here.
