COLUMBIA, S.C. – A match that seemed destined for a scoreless draw ended in a shock golden goal with 28 seconds remaining in double overtime as Clemson (4-1-0) defeated South Carolina, 1-0, Saturday night at Stone Stadium.
The ninth-largest women’s soccer crowd in Stone Stadium history of 1,633 was on hand in a match that the two rivals played dead even on the stat sheet for 110 minutes before Clemson’s Liska Dobberstein took a deflected pass eight yards out and slotted past goalkeeper Sabrina D’Angelo for the victory. The Gamecock (2-2-1) loss ended a four-match winning streak against the Tigers and was just the second overtime match in the history of the series.
“Our girls were tough and gave it their all,” South Carolina head coach Shelley Smith said. “We made a crucial mistake at the end to let them get the service off, but we’re learning and getting better every time we step off. How we respond to a loss like this will be the sign of a good team, and I know we’ll bounce back.”
D’Angelo made her return to South Carolina after missing the first four matches of the season while competing for Canada at the FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup in Japan. The sophomore, who had her first post-World Cup practice with the team Thursday afternoon, registered two saves in the second half, equal to the two saves that Clemson freshman Hunter Rittgers was forced to make for the Tigers.
The two teams were nearly even across the board on the stat sheet with both squads amassing 10 shots and two saves on the night. South Carolina had a 2-1 edge in corner kicks and were whistled for 17 fouls to Clemson’s 15 in what was a physical match from the opening whistle. The teams combined for only five shots on target in the match.
The Gamecock backline held the Tigers without a single shot in the opening 45 minutes of action, but the Tigers rebounded in the second half to get seven attempts off.
South Carolina hosts East Carolina in the non-conference finale on Sunday, September 8 at Stone Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
