COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina forward Coryn Bajema was named the SEC Freshman of the Week after her three-goal outburst over the weekend to lead the Gamecocks to shutout victories over Mercer and Jacksonville.
Bajema is the seventh Gamecock to earn the SEC Freshman of the Week honor, the last being Sabrina D’Angelo who was selected on October 17, 2011.
They Lynden, Wash., product put an end to South Carolina’s early season scoring woes by notching three goals in two games over the Gamecocks’s home opening weekend. Bajema scored the second in a 2-0 win over Mercer before bouncing back three days later to score twice – including the game-winning goal – in a 3-0 win against Jacksonville for a six-point week. The freshman has shown accuracy with seven shots with five shots on goal for three goals over the weekend and currently leads the Gamecocks in goals (3) and points (6) while sporting a stellar .727 shots on goal percentage.
Bajema is just the eighth freshman in Gamecock history to notch three goals in a two-game period, following the likes of Lexi Tourtellotte (1995), Jennie Ondo (1996), Lydia Bienias and Morgan McIntyre (1998), Becca Epstein (2000), Ashley Gosnell (2001) and Kayla Grimsley (2008) as freshman to earn at least three goals in a two-match stretch.
South Carolina hosts Clemson in a rivalry match under the lights at Stone Stadium on Saturday, September 1. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
