COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina hosts Jacksonville Sunday afternoon in an attempt to win its second straight match of the weekend. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Eugene E. Stone III Stadium and continues a series of six consecutive home games at “The Graveyard” after opening the season on the road last weekend.
The Gamecocks (1-1-1) defeated Mercer, 2-0, in Friday night’s home opener with goals by Rae Wilson and Coryn Bajema. Jacksonville brings a 1-1-0 record into Columbia.
Fans can park in the Athletics Village Parking Garage adjacent to Stone Stadium on Heyward Street. Season Tickets for the 2012 season are currently on sale. Ticket prices are $25 for adults and $10 for youth. They can be purchased at GamecocksOnline.com or by calling (800) 4SC-FANS.
ON THE HORIZON
The Gamecocks play only one match on Labor Day weekend with rival Clemson coming to Stone Stadium for a Saturday night clash under the lights. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
SCOUTING JACKSONVILLE
Jacksonville was picked by the coaches to finish second in the Atlantic Sun after finishing in a tie for first in the league in 2011. The Dolphins are 1-1-0 on the year after defeating Florida Atlantic in double overtime and falling to FIU. Freshman Jill D’Amico holds a 0.91 goals against average with five saves. Sunday’s match marks the first meeting between the Gamecocks and Dolphins.
LAST TIME OUT – SOUTH CAROLINA 2, MERCER 0
South Carolina earned goals from Rae Wilson and Coryn Bajema to put away Mercer, 2-0, in the 2012 home opener at Stone Stadium Thursday night for the team’s first win of the season.
Senior Darien Vercillo recorded two saves to post her second shutout of the year for South Carolina. Andie Romness, Courtney Angotti-Smith and Gabrielle Gilbert registered assists for South Carolina.
“We’re thrilled to get a win and score some goals,” South Carolina head coach Shelley Smith said. “It’s a good feeling for sure. We didn’t come out starting like we should have at home. It was a slow first half, and I’m really proud of how the team responded in the second half. They were doing things we’ve worked on the past week to get better from last weekend’s games. They applied that in the second half and got a result. I’m proud of that effort.”
RAE OF LIGHT
Redshirt junior Rae Wilson missed all of the 2011 season recovering from hip surgery, but the Greenville native has started 2012 with a bang. Wilson has scored a point in each of South Carolina’s last two games, registering an assist at Minnesota and hitting the game-winning goal against Mercer. The goal was the second of Wilson’s career – the first coming in a three-point game at Arkansas in 2010 when she notched a goal and an assist.
BAJEMA HONOR
Freshman Coryn Bajema earned her spot as South Carolina’s starter on the left wing in her first career game, and the tall forward has played well in the position, culminating in her first career goal in Thursday’s win against Mercer. Bajema fills the void left by another tall player in Maria Petroni who had a career season as a senior in 2011.
ANGOTTI-SMITH MAKES HER DEBUT
Freshman Courtney Angotti-Smith missed the season opening weekend after suffering a niggle in training, but the Goose Creek native made her debut against Mercer in outstanding fashion. Angotti-Smith earned 43 minutes off the bench and immediately made a spark for the Gamecock offense, setting up the corner kick that led to Rae Wilson’s game-winning goal before adding an assist on Coryn Bajema’s insurance score.
