COLUMBIA, S.C. – The South Carolina women’s soccer team will report for the first day of preseason camp on Wednesday, Aug. 1 in preparation for the 2012 season.
Shelley Smith’s team will hold 20 training sessions in addition to hosting an exhibition at Stone Stadium against 2011 NCAA runner-up Duke on Thursday, Aug. 9 at 7 p.m. Training begins Wednesday at 8 a.m. at the Gamecock practice fields. South Carolina returns six starters and 16 letterwinners from last year’s SEC Championship team that went 16-7-0 and a program-best 9-2-0 in conference play.
Freshman All-American Sabrina D’Angelo – the 2011 SEC Freshman and Co-Defensive Player of the Year – returns in goal for the Gamecocks but will miss a portion of the season while competing for the Canada Under-20 Women’s National Team at the 2012 U-20 Women’s World Cup in Japan from Aug. 19 to September 8. D’Angelo will leave with Team Canada on Wednesday, Aug. 8 and return to the Gamecocks at the conclusion of Canada’s run in the tournament. The goalkeeper will miss between four and six games during the non-conference portion of the season in addition to the exhibition game against Duke.
