COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina senior women’s golfer Katie Burnett claimed a spot on the Capital One Academic All-District 4 At-Large Team on Thursday, adding another honor to her storied career.
A two-time All-SEC second-team golfer, Burnett has shined throughout her South Carolina career, holding the lowest career average in program history with one tournament left to play. Twice, Burnett has led the Gamecocks to a NCAA Regional win, in 2010 and 2012, taking medalist honors in the 2010 event in Greenville, N.C. An honorable mention All-American in 2010 as well, Burnett has six top-10 finishes to her credit in 10 starts in 2012, leading the Gamecocks in each event.
A three-time SEC Academic Honor Roll member, Burnett was South Carolina’s female nominee for the H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete of the Year award. Twice a National Golf Coaches Association All-America Scholar, Burnett also has earned a spot in the 2012 U.S. Women’s Open field at the Black Wolf Run Championship Course in Kohler, Wis., July 5-8. Burnett won her qualifier by two strokes to garner the invite.
Burnett is looking to become the second South Carolina women’s golfer to earn Academic All-America honors, after Adrienne Gautreaux in 2003. This is the second-consecutive year a Gamecock has made the women’s at-large all-district squad, following Taryn Zack’s selection in 2011.
The Capital One Academic All-America Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America, will be released for Division I on June 7.
