LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Despite an impressive 6-4 win by its Western squad, the fourth-ranked South Carolina equestrian team lost a 10-10 tiebreaker to No. 8 New Mexico State at the New Mexico Sate Equestrian Center on Saturday. The Gamecocks are now 3-2 on the season.
“As a whole, I think we rode well today. The meet was closer than the scores reflect,” South Carolina head coach Boo Major said. “Congratulations to New Mexico State for its win today. I pleased with the efforts of our Western team. Our Hunt Seat made a good effort too, but it just wasn’t in the cards for them today.”
The Gamecocks spotted the Aggies a 6-4 lead after dropping the Hunt Seat portion of Saturday’s competition.
In Equitation on the Flat, junior Logan Holler and freshman Katherine Schmidt picked up two points for the Gamecocks. Holler earned a one-point win over New Mexico State’s Brianna Raab, while Schmidt won, 71-64, over the Aggies’ Sydney Morse.
In Equitation Over Fences, Schmidt completed her 2-for-2 day by picking up an 80-77 win over Laura Bostwick. Junior Kimberly McCormack scored a 78 to deafat the Aggies’ Beth Solomon, who scored a 77.
Trailing 6-4, South Carolina’s Horsemanship team lifted the Gamecocks in front of the Aggies by winning four of five points. Sophomore Johnna Letchworth improved to 4-0 on the season and claimed the Gamecocks’ lone MVP of the day by defeating her opponent, 74.5-74. Sophomore Alison Ceresani also improved to 4-0 with her 71-70.5 win over Megan Gould. Seniors Maggie Fortune and Taylor Singmaster also won their rides, as all of four of Carolina’s points.
In the driver’s seat with an 8-7 lead, the Gamecocks dropped three of four points, allowing the Aggies to tie the competition at 10-10, where they won on the raw score tiebreaker. Audrey Jewell picked up a 70-69.5 win to give the Gamecocks a 9-7 lead, but the Aggies went on to win three of the remaining four points. Freshman Cody McMillion, competing for the first time as a Gamecock, won her point over New Mexico State’s Andrea Allen.
The Gamecocks return to action on Friday, Nov. 4 when they host Georgia at One Wood Farm in Blythewood. Friday’s competition against the Bulldogs will begin at 1 p.m. and admission is free.
