COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina senior defender Ellen Fahey picked up her second honor of the week Wednesday in being named to the Soccer America National Team of the Week after previously being selected the SEC Defensive Player of the Week earlier this week.
It is the third honor of the season for Fahey, who earlier this year was named to the Our Game Magazine Team of the Week in addition to the SEC honor she earned earlier this week. She is the first Gamecock to earn the Soccer America national honor since Kayla Grimsley was selected by the publication on Nov. 17, 2009, for her exploits in the first round of the 2009 NCAA Tournament.
Fahey captained the Gamecock defense to a big weekend that saw the team earn their first six-point weekend of the SEC season. Fahey registered her first two points of the season in addition to spearheading a backline that limited the oppositions opportunities. Both of her assists were on South Carolina’s game-winning goals against Alabama and Auburn. Against Alabama, Fahey assisted on Au’s 19th minute goal with a header to the scorer. Fahey then assisted on Gabrielle Gilbert’s game-winning goal against nationally-ranked Auburn with a header off a corner kick to the scorer. Carolina’s starting center back, Fahey led a defense that limited Alabama to only three shots on goal and kept Auburn – the league’s No. 2 ranked offense – to just eight shots on goal.
South Carolina hits the road this weekend with a trip to the Magnolia State to jump-start a three-match road swing. The Gamecocks will take on Mississippi State Friday and Ole Miss Sunday to continue competition against the SEC West. Gamecock fans making the trip to Starkville for Saturday’s football game are encouraged to arrive Friday night and attend the Gamecock-Mississippi State soccer match.
