Columbia, S.C. – The No.11 University of South Carolina men’s soccer team defeated No. 24 Wake Forest, 2-1, in front of a crowd of 2,234 at Eugene E. Stone III Stadium in Columbia, S.C. The Gamecocks improve to 4-1, while the Demon Deacons fall to 3-3.
South Carolina took an early 1-0 lead in the first half. Jordan Quinn, scoring his fourth goal of the season, took the pass from sophomore Ryan Daley and slipped the ball past the goalkeeper with only one minute off the clock. USC would enter halftime with a 1-0 lead over the Demon Deacons.
At the 60:25 mark, Joey Worthen and Quinn combined for the Gamecock’s second goal of the match. Worthen’s goal would wind up being the game-winning goal. Just minutes later Chris Lonteen knocked in a pass from Jeremiah White, scoring Wake Forest’s lone goal of the match.
The match was even in almost every category. USC and Wake Forest both tallied nine shots on goal. USC’s goalkeeper, Michael Bachmeyer, registered four saves, while Demon Deacon William Hesner posted two saves. Wake Forest’s defenders also made two diving saves off the line.
Quinn, who leads the team in both goals and assists, recorded one goal and one assist in today’s contest.
“This was a very convincing win for our team,” commented Head Coach Mark Berson. “I am very pleased for them (the players).”
With this win South Carolina improves its win streak to three matches. South Carolina returns to Stone Stadium on Wednesday, Sept. 26 to face Davidson at 7:00 p.m.
