Columbia, S.C. – Senior midfielder Melinda Carter scored her sixth goal of the season and senior goalkeeper Carolyn Ortega earned her second shutout as the South Carolina women’s soccer team (12-5-2, 4-3-2 SEC) defeated Wofford 1-0 on Tuesday evening at Stone Stadium. Carolina concludes the regular season on Friday at 7 p.m. at UNC-Greensboro. South Carolina heads to Oxford, Miss. next week for the SEC Tournament.
“We did a good job tonight of creating scoring chances in the second half,” said USC head coach Shelley Smith. “We would have liked to have put a couple more shots in the net but we’re glad to come away with a win.”
The Gamecocks outshot Wofford 15-4, including 13-1 in the second half. After a scoreless first period, Carolina came out and put in the only goal of the night in the 51st minute of play. Sophomore defender Sarah Lentz nailed a diagonal cross to Carter, who cut into the penalty box and beat Terrier goalkeeper Katie Menegaz to the left corner. Carter’s goal was her sixth of the season and moves her to 17 points on the year, leading the Gamecocks. Wofford came close to tying the match with its only shot of the second half.
Midfielder Jaime Cutts launched a shot from 25 yards out that hit the crossbar with 15 minutes remaining in the match. Carolina senior goalkeeper Carolyn Ortega is now 3-2 on the season in goal for USC.
