Columbia, S.C. – Junior defender Robert Rosenberg scored the lone goal of the match in the 93rd minute to give South Carolina a 1-0 victory over No. 25 Rutgers tonight in Piscataway, N.J. The Gamecocks improve to 9-3-1, while the Scarlet Knights fall to 5-5-3.
Rutgers outshot South Carolina 12-9, while USC held the advantage in corner kicks 4-3. Both teams battled to a scoreless tie after regulation.
Three minutes and 55 seconds into the first overtime, Rosenberg socred an unassisted, game-winning goal to lift the Gamecocks to their ninth win of the season. Gamecock goalkeeper Michael Bachmeyer posted four saves en route to his fifth shutout of the season.
“This was a big win for us on the road against a hard-fighting, well-disciplined Rutgers team,” stated Head Coach Mark Berson. “They are a team that is in contention for an NCAA bid. Our players carried a sustained effort throughout the match.”
The Gamecocks return to action Wednesday, Oct. 23 when they head to Charleston, S.C. to face the Cougars. Kickoff is slated for 6 p.m. Following the match against the College of Charleston, the Gamecocks host nationally-ranked Furman on Sunday, Oct. 27 at 2:00 p.m. The first 300 fans will receive an adidas scarf.
