Columbia, S.C. – Freshman forward Camille Toney scored her third goal of the season and Elise Matthews had five saves in goal for USC as the South Carolina women’s soccer team (10-5-1, 3-3-1 SEC) tied No. 13 Tennessee (10-5, 3-2-1 SEC) 1-1 on Sunday afternoon. South Carolina will next compete on Friday at 8:30 p.m. ET at Auburn.
“I’m very proud of our team’s effort this afternoon,” said USC head coach Shelley Smith. “We did a good job of coming back from a goal down and we battled the entire match.” The match was scoreless until 70:22 in the second half when the Lady Vols took a 1-0 lead. Tennessee forward Rihan Wilkinson caught a pass on the left wing and drilled a shot from seven yards out past Matthews for a one goal advantage.
Carolina came back to knot the match at one four minutes later with Toney’s goal. Senior midfielder Melinda Carter dribbled down the midfield to find freshman forward Amanda Thurber cutting across the box. Thurber knocked the ball ahead to Toney, who knocked in the goal from eight yards out to the left corner and to beat Tennessee goalie Ellen Dean.
The match would remain scoreless but not without Carolina forward Ashley Williams coming close on two opportunities in the second stanza of overtime. With 3:34 left in the second overtime, Williams knocked a shot from 15 yards out that hit the crossbar and with 35 seconds remaining came in again, only to shoot just left of the goal.
Carolina enters the final weekend of SEC play on Friday at Auburn at 8:30 p.m. ET. Carolina concludes the SEC regular season on Sunday at 2 p.m. ET at Alabama.
