ATHENS, S.C. – South Carolina men’s tennis wrapped up day two of the Southern Intercollegiate Championships at Dan Magill Tennis Complex Saturday night. Sophomore Alexander Kostanov scored the Gamecocks’ lone single win of the day in the consolation bracket of Division I Singles, while a freshman Jake Bowling and junior Henry Walker paired up for a doubles win in Division II action.

In the main draw of Division I Singles, junior Ivan Machado took on SEC rival Ryan Lipman of Vanderbilt. Facing the nation’s 20th-ranked player, Machado fought his way to a 6-3 first-set win. The second set was decided by a single service break with Lipman coming out on top 6-4. In the second set, Machado struggled to hold serve, falling 6-2 to take the loss.

In doubles play, Machado and Menzies took on SEC foe Javier Garrapiz and Hernus Pieters of Georgia. The Gamecock duo battled through several service breaks, but could not over come the Bulldog tandem, falling 8-3. In Division II doubles play, Bowling and Walker advanced posted an 8-6 win over Liberty’s duo of Shea Thomas and Giancarlo Lemmi in the Round of 32. In the next round, the duo fell to Sergey Belov and Yuta Hirokawa of Winthrop by the same score.

In consolation play, Alexander Kostanov is the last Gamecock remaining in the tournament as he claimed a 7-6 (3), 6-3 win over College of Charleston’s Lukas Koneilia in Division I action. The remainder of play in the consolation brackets was cancelled due to inclement weather expected in the area on Sunday.

In Division II consolation play, Chris Sheehan suffered a 6-4, 6-3 loss to USF’s Federico Sabogal, and Menzies dropped a 6-2, 6-0 decision to Mercer’s Pierre Tafelski. Bowling took on Chattanooga’s Rick van de Borenkamp, bouncing back from a 6-3 first-set loss to claim the second set in a tie-breaker 7-6 (3). The third set was decided by a super tiebreaker, which van de Bornekamp claimed 10-7.
