COLUMBIA, S.C. – In their final match of the 2001 season, the USC women’s soccer (8-7-3) team defeated UNC-Greensboro, 2-0, Friday evening at Stone Stadium. The Gamecocks finish the season above .500 for the first time since the 1999 campaign.

“I felt we played a great game and I was happy with the performance,” said USC Head Coach Shelley Smith. “Our players played with a lot of pride and it was nice to finish the season strong.”

After a scoreless first half, the Gamecocks got on the scoreboard at 62:39 as a mistake by Spartans goalkeeper Kathryn Clewley, provided sophomore Jess Julin with an open net and the first goal of the game. The Gamecocks finished the scoring at 86:24 when sophomore Amy Caddies took a pass from senior co-captain Lydia Bienias to give the Gamecocks the 2-0 lead.

South Carolina finished the match even with UNC Greensboro in shots with 11 apiece. Carolina goalkeeper Elise Matthews finished with the shutout and four saves in the contest.

Before tonight’s contest, USC honored its seniors, Lydia Bienias and Jessica Ward for their four years at South Carolina.
