The USC Equestrian team won Saturday’s hunt seat competition and tied with Berry College for first on Sunday at Auburn’s Intercollegiate Horse Show in Auburn, Alabama.

Though a valiant effort, the wins were not enough to overcome the point deficit experienced by the team from the weekend before.

“We had a great weekend,” Coach Boo Duncan said. “The girl’s were very focused and made very few mistakes. Unfortunately the wins this weekend were not enough to put us over the top.”

The Lady Gamecocks lost the overall hunt seat title by five points.

“You can’t be disappointed with their performance this weekend,” Duncan added. “Last weekend’s defeat came back to haunt us as I thought it might.”

First place finishes were enjoyed by junior Tracy Tomala in Open Flat, junior Kelly Girtman in Intermediate Flat, junior Brooke Spitzer in Intermediate flat, junior Lisa Wilson in Novice Flat and sophomore Lindsey Wilson in Novice fences.

Sophomore Lauren Brown won Advanced Walk/Trot/Canter both days and senior Kelly Caine won walk/trot both days. Lindsey Wilson was named reserve high point rider on Sunday after winning her over fences class and placing second on the flat.

Junior Sarah Tomasi was named high point rider for the region and will be representing the region in the Caccionne Cup at Nationals at Cazenovia College in Cazenovia, New York in May.

Several individuals have qualified for post season competition as well. The individuals that qualified to go to regionals are Sarah Tomasi in Open flat and fences, Kelly Girtman in Intermediate flat and fences, Jennifer Caban and Alexis Pospischil in Novice flat, Lauren Brown, Lisa Wilson, Jessica Keels and Lisa Boykin in Advanced walk/trot/canter and Lisa Boykin in Intermediate Horsemanship.

Regionals will be held on March 30 at Berry College in Rome, Georgia. Placing first through third at regionals will advance the individual to Zones which will be held April 7 and 8 at Midway College in Lexington, Ky.
