Five South Carolina men’s tennis players and one doubles team were victorious in day two action at the 2001 Southern Collegiate Championships on Saturday.
No.7 seed Carl Wermee defeated Louisiana State’s Sebastian Rutka (6-2, 5-7, 6-1) and Middle Tennessee State’s Kirk Jackson (6-4, 6-1) on his way to the quarterfinals. Wermee will square off against No. 2 seed Simon Rea from Tennessee at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday.
Doubles action saw South Carolina’s No. 16 seeded team of Angelo Nichelescu and Marcus Westman pull off a 9-8 (4) victory over UT-Chattanooga’s team of Knizat/Ontog. Up next for Nichelescu/Westman will be a quarterfinal matchup against the No. 5 seeded team of Ambert/Fomine from Mississippi State.
