GAINESVILLE, Fla. –
Continuing in competition at the SEC East Challenge, the South Carolina men’s and women’s swimming teams both earned dual meet victories vs. Kentucky, Saturday morning. The men’s squad defeated Kentucky 123.5 to 108.5 and the women’s squad outlasted the Wildcats 132 to 110.

“Overall the level of competitiveness is greater then last year,” said USC Head Swimming Coach Don Gibb. “If you compare the results with Kentucky last year, we lost to both Kentucky teams last year by a large margin. We have some athletes that we have added with some more ability and have excited the whole group.”

Leading the way on the men’s side was sophomore Istvan Bathazi, who won three individual events for USC. Bathazi won the 1000 yard freestyle (9:45.38), 200 yard IM (1:53.99) and 200 yard breaststroke (2:04.72). All-American Zsolt Gaspar also won two individual events for the Gamecocks in the 50 yard freestyle (20.78) and 100 yard freestyle (46.02). Also winning two individual events for USC was sophomore Tamas Szucs. Last year’s SEC champion in the 200 yard freestyle, won the 200 yard free (1:41.26) and 500 yard free (4:37.64). Also winning an individual event for the men’s squad was Chris McCrary in the 200 yard butterfly (1:50.03).

For the women’s team, freshman Heather Skaggs continued her hot start to the season, winning the 200 yard freestyle (1:52.11) and 100 yard freestyle (51.37) for the second consecutive day. Freshman Carolynn McHugh also won her first individual heat of the season in the 50 freestyle (24.08). Also contributing was freshman Capi Adams who won the 200 yard IM (2:09.80) and 200 yard breaststroke (2:24.34).

South Carolina will be back in action this evening at 6 p.m. for the SEC East Invitational. USC will compete against Florida, Georgia, Kentucky and Tennessee.
