Columbia, S.C. – The University of South Carolina men’s soccer team lost their first match of the Gamecock Soccer Classic after falling to the Maryland Terrapins 1-0 tonight at Stone Stadium. USC falls to 8-3, while the Terrapins improve to 6-5-1.
With only nine seconds remaining in the first half, Maryland’s Scott Buete fired from 15-yards out to score the lone goal of the match. Philip Alyer and Siba Mohammed were credited with the assists.
“To outshoot a team like Maryland, 13-5, shows we came back with a great deal of intensity in the second half,” stated Head Coach Mark Berson. “I give the team a lot of credit.”
USC outshot the Terrapins, 7-1, in the second half of play. Gamecock goalkeeper Michael Bachmeyer posted two saves, while Maryland’s Noah Palmer registered five saves.
In the first match of the Gamecock Soccer Classic, No. 8 rutgers defeated College of Charleston, 1-0. Charleston scored an own goal at the 72:48 mark, giving Rutgers the victory. Rutgers outshot the Cougars 8-7, while Charleston’s goalkeeper tallied four saves. The Scarlet Knights improve to 9-2-2, while College of Charleston drops to 2-7-1.
The second day of the Gamecock Soccer Classic begins Sunday, Oct. 21 at 11:00 a.m. when College of Charleston takes on Maryland . No. 11 South Carolina will host No. 8 Rutgers in the second match of the day. Kickoff is slated for 1:30.
