Columbia, S. C. – Joey Worthen’s third game-winning goal of the season gave South Carolina a 4-1 edge over Davidson tonight at Stone Stadium. The Gamecocks improve to 5-1, while the Wildcats drop to 5-2.

Davidson was on the board first, scoring their lone goal of the match at 27:18. Jon Tetirick tapped in a pass from Chris Norbet to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead. South Carolina fired six shots on goal in the first have but could not reach the back of the net. USC trailed at the half, 1-0.

The Gamecocks dominated in the second half, outshooting the Wildcats 7-2. Davidson did not have a shot on goal until eight minutes remaining in the match.

Ryan Daley tied the game off a pass from Dave Moore. Jack Cummings passed to Moore who found Daley blazing down the left side of the field. Daley would eventually knock the ball in from about 10 feet out, tying the game at 1-1.

At the 58:53 mark, Worthen, assisted by Daley, scored the second goal of the match, giving USC a 2-1 lead. This marks the third consecutive match Worthen has scored the game-winning goal.

“Jack (Cummings) gave Ryan (Daley) a good cross who put it right in front of me, stated Worthen. “All I had to do was put it in.”

Jordan Quinn, who headed Worthen’s rebound shot off the cross bar, scored an insurance goal in the 68th minute. Quinn currently leads the team with five goals.

With less then nine minutes remaining in the match, senior defender, Ryan Stocking, scored the Gamecock’s final goal of the night. Freshman Raymond Fischer served the ball to Stocking who put the ball in the back of the net.

Davidson’s goalkeeper entered this match with a goals against average of .52, but was not strong enough to keep the Gamecocks scoreless. USC outshot the Wildcats 12-7. South Carolina’s goalkeeper, Michael Bachmeyer recorded his fifth win of the season.

“I thought we played really well,” commented Head Coach Mark Berson. “We had several good chances tonight. I am proud of how the guys kept their composure.”

South Carolina, riding a four-match win streak, will host College of Charleston Sunday, Sept. 30 at 2:00 p.m.
