Clemson, S.C. – The University of South Carolina men’s soccer team fell to Clemson, 2-1, at Riggs Field in Clemson, S.C. on Sunday afternoon. USC drops to 7-2, while Clemson improves to 7-2.

The first shot of the match, by either team, resulted in a Gamecock goal. Sophomore Ryan Daley, assisted by Jordan Quinn and Joey Worthen, slipped the ball past Tiger goalkeeper Doug Warren off a break away at the 4:38 mark. USC would hold on to its one goal lead for thirty minutes.

Clemson forward Steven Rhyne served the ball to Dimelon Westfield, who reached the back of the net from eight yards out, tying the match at 1-1. One minute and six seconds later Clemson struck again. Ryhne knocked the ball past Gamecock goalkeeper Michael Bachmeyer, giving the Tigers a 2-1 lead. Conaway and Onyewu were each credited with an assist on Ryne’s goal. Both of Clemson’s goal were scored off long throw-ins and goal mouth scrambles. South Carolina entered halftime trailing 2-1.

In a scoreless second half, USC outshot the Tigers 9-3. The Gamecocks had two missed opportunities in the 63rd minute. Joey Worthen’s shot was one foot shy of the goal, followed by a misdirected kick by Jon Rich.

I am proud of the way we attacked,” stated Head Coach Mark Berson. “We just couldn’t convert.”

The Gamecocks return home on Monday, Oct. 15 to host Gardner Webb at 7:00 p.m.
