The 28th-ranked South Carolina men’s tennis team defeated the 47th-ranked Demon Deacons from Wake Forest, 5-2 today at the Sam Daniel Tennis Center. Today’s match kicks off the Gamecocks longest week of the season with their last home match on Wednesday against Duke and matches at both Tennessee (Friday) and Vanderbilt (Sunday).
Coming off of last week’s win against the top ranked player in the country Oskar Johannson of Arkansas, at number one singles was 17th-ranked Guilluame Legat. The All-American candidate is the lone senior for the Gamecocks. He stretched his win streak to 12 straight, and remains undefeated at number one singles with an 11-0 record. Today he easily took down Wake Forest’s Raul Munoz, 6-0, 6-1 and raised his overall record to 17-5.
Besting Legat’s overall record is sophomore Seth Rose at 21-8. Rose clinched the match for the Gamecocks at number two singles with a win over Mike Murray (WFU), 6-4, 3-6, 6-2. Carl Wermee (USC) defeated Trent Brendon (WFU) in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4. Also adding points to the Gamecock’s total were juniors David Nelson and Rodrigo Pacheco at number three and six singles.
On Wednesday South Carolina will host Duke University for their final home match of the season. They will honor their only senior Legat, before doubles at 1:45 p.m. at the Sam Daniel Tennis Center. Doubles will immediately follow the ceremony.
