CHARLESTON, S.C. – The South Carolina men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams defeated College of Charleston Friday evening. The men’s team defeated Charleston 134-83 and the Lady Gamecocks were victorious 121-85. The Gamecocks men’s and women’s squads are now each 2-1 on the season and will return to the Carolina Natatorium for their first home meet, next Saturday at 9 a.m. vs. N.C. State.

“I think we raced well from top to bottom,” said USC Head Swimming Coach Don Gibb. “Most are swimmers paced well and our race strategies were good. We’re much improved from this meet last year and I am very encouraged with our team going into our next meet with N.C. State.”

South Carolina won the first 16 heats of the meet before swimming exhibition the rest of the night. Winning individual heats for the men’s squad included: Istvan Bathazi (800 free, 200 IM), Tamas Szucs (200 free), Zsolt Gaspar (50 free, 100 free), Chris McCrary (200 butterfly), and Lir Derieg (200 back). Winning individual heats for the women’s squad included: Bronwyn Dedekind (800 free), Jen VanAssen (200 free), Carolynn McHugh (50 free), Capi Adams (200 IM), Anna Nyiry (200 butterfly), Heather Skaggs (100 free) and Kristen Butler (200 backstroke).

South Carolina also came away with victories on the one-meter and three-meter boards in the diving competition. Sophomore Holly Hodges earned two first place finishes on the one-meter and three-meter boards for the women’s squad. Senior Brad Brown placed first on the one-meter for the men and freshman Dean Emmerton placed first on the three-meter board.
