Fort Wayne, Ind. – The South Carolina men’s soccer team started the 2001 season on the right foot…going undefeated in their first tournament of the season. At the IP-Fort Wayne Soccer Showcase, an exhibition tournament, South Carolina tied No. 4 Indiana, 0-0, and defeated the No. 23 University of Kentucky Wildcats, 2-0.

In game one against Indiana, the two teams played a scoreless 90 minutes with a total of only eight shots taken in the game. South Carolina posted three shots, while Indiana registered five.

It was a physical battle from the beginning with the first of four yellow cards handed out just 14 minutes into the game. The game continued in an aggressive fashion with each defense aiming to prove that it was the best.

This marks the third time the Gamecocks and Hoosiers have been unable to crown a winner. Their record stands at 3-3-3.

In game two, USC men’s soccer team defeated No. 23 Kentucky, 2-0, in their second game of the IP-Fort Wayne Soccer Showcase exhibition tournament. USC has defeated the Wildcats for the third consecutive time.

USC’s Jordan Quinn scored the game-winning goal when he headed in a crossing pass just past UK goalkeeper Brad Samelko to take the 1-0 lead with 9:43 remaining in the first half. The Gamecocks then got an insurance goal at the 79:36 mark.

South Carolina opens its regular season at home against Penn State on Sunday, Sept. 2 at 2:00 p.m.
