The South Carolina women’s golf team shot a 309 Tuesday and stands in 10th place heading into tomorrow’s final round at the Spartan Invitational at San Jose State University. However, junior All-American Kristy McPherson took over the individual lead, firing a three-under 69, giving her a two day total of 140 and a three stroke lead on the field. McPherson, the 2001 SEC medalist, added five more birdies on the day giving her a total of nine for the tournament.

The Lady Gamecocks will look for another strong finish on Wednesday to earn their third top five finish of the year.

The Lady Gamecocks had two other players fire rounds in the 70’s as senior Reetta Laakkonen fired a 79 ( 156, T45) and sophomore Adrienne Gautreaux with her second straight 79 (158, T50). Rounding out the Lady Gamecocks scoring were sophomore Marci Robinson with an 82 (160, T55) and junior Kacy Thompson with an 85 (161, T63).

California leads heading into tomorrow’s final round with a score of 589, one better than New Mexico State with a 590. Pepperdine fell to third and is tied with Washington, who are just two back. Oklahoma State rounds out the top five with a score of 594.

In the Individual competition, McPherson holds a three stroke lead over Southern California’s Mikaela Parmlid who also fired a second round of 69, and Lindsey Wright of Pepperdine, each with a two day total of 143. Washington’s Louise Friberg, California’s Sarah Huarte, and Southern California’s Becky Lucidi are all in a tie for fourth place with a two day total of 144.
