Columbia, S.C. – The University of South Carolina women’s cross country team, with a point total of 199, finished in seventh place at the 2001 Southeastern Conference Championships in Auburn, Ala.

Arkansas won their fifth consecutive SEC title with a total of 35 points. Tennessee finished second, while Florida rounded-out the top three.

Freshman Jenny Lake, posting a time of 20:42, placed 21st to lead the Gamecocks. Running their fastest times of the season, Rachel Smith and Abby Sox, both finished in the top 50. Smith ran a time of 21:13 to finish 36th. Crossing the finish line at 21:31, Sox placed 45th.

“I am very happy with the way we performed,” commented Cross Country Coach Stan Rosenthal. “Our seniors, Rachel Smith, Abby Sox and Kinsey Eschenburg, came through for us today. They had their highest SEC finishes of their career.”

Kinsey Eschenburg (47th) and Criston Dailey (54th) closed out the Gamecock’s top five.

Arkansas’ Andreina Byrd and Christin Wurth finished one-two, to help give the Lady Razorbacks their fifth straight SEC Championship.

The Gamecocks travel to Greenville, S. C. for the NCAA Southeast Regionals on Nov. 10.
