COLUMBIA, S.C. –
Defending boys’ 18 singles division champion Joseph Carvalho of Rock Hill withstood a second-set rally by Columbia’s Lance Kefalos and repeated as champion Wednesday in the final round of the Wachovia South Carolina Closed Junior Hardcourt Championships, being held on the University of South Carolina campus.

Carvalho cruised out to a 6-2 first-set victory only to see Kefalos, the number two seed, race back for a 6-2 second-set win and force a third and deciding frame. But the defending champion saved his best for last and cruised to a 6-2 win in the deciding set, the second-straight three-set win for Carvalho.

Five more championship flight titles were awarded Wednesday with the only girls champion crowned being a Columbia native as Haley Baird downed Virginia Berry, 6-4, 6-2, to win the 14’s division. Other boys champions were Christopher Lawdahl (Greenville) over Stephen Behr (Florence), 6-3, 7-5, in the 10s; Philip Hocker (Spartanburg) over Richard Pearce (Mount Pleasant), 6-0, 6-0 in the 12s; Caleb Barnes (Irmo) over Michael Nicol (Spartanburg), 6-3, 6-2 in the 14s; and Wyatt Boylston (Lexington) over Chris Peek (Lexington), 6-3, 6-2 in the 16s.

More than 350 of the state’s top junior tennis players took part in the annual event, as boys and girls competed in five different age divisions – 10s, 12s, 14s, 16s and 18s – in both singles and doubles action.
