COLUMBIA, S.C. –
The 2002 Wachovia USTA Boys Junior Davis Cup resumed action Sunday morning for Day Two of the four day tournament on the campus of the University of South Carolina in Columbia, S.C. Once again, all top four seeded teams advanced in the championship draw.
#3 Midwest faced a tough Texas team and came away the 5-2 victors against their opponents from the Lone Star State. Texas’ No. 1 singles Robert Gallman was able to defeat the Midwest’s Mark Barrt 6-7 (3), 6-1, 6-1, and Texas’ No. 3 singles Hoony Shin downed Paul Rose 6-1, 6-0, but that was all Texas could manage as the Midwest team easily won the rest of the singles and all of the doubles matches.
#2 Southern advanced as they defeated New England 6-1. No.2 doubles team Tyler Deming and Kevin Bergeson were the only victors for New England, as Robert Cameron and Danny Bryon retired in the second set, 2-6. 3-0 (Ret.). Southern’s No.1 singles Jermaine Jenkins lead the tough Southern team with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Ned Samuelson. Southern will now face Midwest on Monday at the Sam Daniel Tennis Center.
Top seeded Southern California easily toppled the Middle States 7-0 as No. 1 singles Derrick Bauer led the Southern Californians with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Joe Mirabile. Bauer also teamed up with Justin Montgomery in the No. 1 doubles and came away with the 7-5, 6-4 victory over Vinah Bhamidipati and Josh Raff.
In the other championship draw match of Sunday, Florida rolled over Intermountain 6-1. At No. 5 singles, Bobby Rasmussen scored the only win for Intermountain, a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Jason Cordova. In No. 1 doubles, Ryler Deheart and John Hoyes led Florida to a 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 victory over Intermountain’s Mark Weinig and Scott Warner. Southern California and Florida will square off on Monday at 10:00 a.m. at the Sam Daniel Tennis Center.
In Consolation Draw action, Mid Atlantic defeated Missouri Valley 4-3 and will face Northern California, who beat Northern 5-2, Monday at 10:00 a.m. at the Columbia Tennis Center. Southwest defeated Hawaii-Pacific 6-1. They next face Eastern Monday at 12:00 noon at the Columbia Tennis Center as Eastern defeated Pacific Northwest 5-2.
The third day of competition begins at 8:00 a.m. and will take place at two courts in the Columbia are: the Sam Daniel Tennis Center, home of USC Men’s Tennis on the USC Campus on Heyward Street at the Roost, and the Columbia Tennis Center, located on the corner of Pickens and Whayley streets. The Junior Davis Cup is considered the nation’s top junior team tournament. All championship draw matches will be played Monday and Tuesday at the Sam Daniel Tennis Center.
