Durham, N. C. – The 12th-ranked University of South Carolina men’s soccer team won its first match of the Duke/adidas Classic, 2-1, against N. C. State today. USC improves to 3-0, while N. C. State drops to 0-3.
The Gamecocks took the early 1-0 lead on a Ricky Quest goal off a rebound at the 20:20 mark of the contest. NC State tied the score at a goal apiece when Phillip Herndl scored on a rebound off a corner kick.
South Carolina’s Jordan Quinn headed in a deflection off a free kick with 20:01 remaining in the second half to lift South Carolina to a 2-1 victory over NC State played at the Duke Soccer Stadium. The winning goal was the only score of the second half.
South Carolina outshot N. C. State 18-5 and had a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks.
TheDuke/adidas Classic concludes on Sunday, Sept. 8 at 1:00 p.m. when the Gamecocks face the Blue Devils of Duke.
