In celebration of National Business Women’s Week, the Columbia Business and Professional Women Wednesday named South Carolina women’s basketball head coach Susan Walvius as the 2002 Woman of the Year. She will be honored Thursday night, October 10th at the Adam’s Mark Hotel where she will also serve as the keynote speaker after the dinner.

Walvius led the Gamecocks to a spot in the Elite Eight in the NCAA Tournament and finished the season ranked sixth in the country with a 25-7 record. The team finished second in the Southeastern Conference with a 10-4 mark.

Alexandra (Alex) Creswick, a student at Dreher High School, will also be honored at the dinner, and will receive the “Breakthrough Leadership” Award for her efforts as a kicker on the Dreher football team.

October 21-25, 2002 is National Business Women’s Week, a week to honor nationwide working women. This marks the 74th anniversary of National Business Women’s Week (NBWW) since its creation in 1928. The event has been sponsored by Business and Professional Women (BPW)/USA for the purpose of recognizing the achievements of working women throughout history. The theme of the dinner is “Careers in Motion.”

The celebration of National Business Women’s Week has helped to promote leadership roles for women and to increase opportunities for their advancement professionally and personally.
