Columbia, S.C. – The South Carolina women’s soccer team scored twice in the second half and senior goalkeeper Carolyn Ortega earned her first shutout of the season as the Gamecocks defeated LSU 2-0 on Sunday afternoon. The win improved Carolina’s recrod to 10-4 on the season and 3-2 in Southeastern Conference play. LSU drops to 10-2-1 and 2-1-1 in the SEC.
“I’m proud of our team effort this afternoon,” said USC head coach Shelley Smith. “We played a full 90 minutes and everyone contributed. Our players worked hard and did a good job of keeping the game at a high level of play throughout the entire match.”
Senior midfielder Jess Julin put the Gamecocks on the board at 68:44 in the second half. Freshman midfielder Katherine Stokes’ corner kick sailed to a cutting Julin in the box, who got her head on the ball and beat LSU goalkeeper Robyn DesOremeaux to the left corner for a 1-0 lead. The goal was Julin’s fourth of the season and her second of the weekend. Stokes’ assist was the first in her Carolina career.
Seven minutes later Carolina increased the lead to 2-0 as sophomore forward Ashley Williams connected on a cross from senior midfielder Melinda Carter, to beat DesOrmeaux to the left corner for the second time. Williams’ goal was her sixth of the season.
LSU outshot the Gamecocks 8-7 in the match with Carolina senior goalkeeper Carolyn Ortega finishing with five saves and her first shutout of the year.
South Carolina returns home next weekend for two more SEC contests. The Gamecocks host Georgia on Friday at 7 p.m. and conclude the weekend with a 1 p.m. match on Sunday vs. No. 21 Tennessee.
