Columbia, S.C. – Senior Morgan McIntyre scored her eighth goal of the season and junior goalkeeper Elise Matthews recorded her fourth shutout as the South Carolina women’s soccer team concluded the regular season with a 2-0 win at UNC-Greensboro on Friday evening. The win improves USC to 13-5-2 as the Gamecocks head to the SEC Tournament next week. South Carolina is one win away from tying the USC single-season record for wins. South Carolina will be the No. 5 seed in the tournament and play No. 4 Florida at 3:30 p.m. ET on Thursday November 7.
After a scoreless first period, Carolina struck early in the early part of the second half with both goals of the match. Two seniors connected for the first USC goal as Melinda Carter’s pass found McIntyre to put the Gamecocks on top at 52:45. The Gamecocks increased the lead to 2-0 at the 59:02 mark as two freshmen combined for the second USC goal. Kimmy Criss fed Camille Toney, who knocked in her fourth goal of the season.
UNC-Greensboro held a 10-9 shot advantage vs. the Gamecocks, while the Gamecocks owned all five corner kicks in the match. Matthews improved to 9-3-2 and had six saves on the evening.
South Carolina finishes the regular season with a 7-2-1 record on the road, the school’s best road record in school history. McIntyre leads the Gamecocks in goals scored, while Carter leads the team in points with 18.
